"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."
-- William Butler Yeats
They want to read about adventures about kids just like them. Experiences they would like to have or do like to have, like birthdays, holidays, first day of school, joining a club for kids, finding out more about fun things on the internet that they can try out, the list goes on forever.
All we have to do as authors and illustrators is remember when we were kids, how we felt, what we wanted to learn, the good times, difficult times, heartbreaking times. Ask yourself, how did you want to be treated as child? What adventures and things did you want to explore?
We write for kids because we love them, care about them, want the best for them, to help them.
"To be as a child...is to be so little that the elves can reach to whisper in your ear; it is to turn pumpkins into coaches, and mice into horses, lowness into loftiness, and nothing into everything, for each child has a fairy godmother in its own soul." -- Francis Thompson
